When we think of the biggest movie franchises, we usually think of Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars, DC, James Bond, movies that have created buzz around the world and spanned generations. The Fast & Furious movies are one of the franchises that should be mentioned in this conversation. Surprisingly, the Fast & Furious franchise is the sixth-highest grossing movie series of all time in terms of global box office revenue, and there is at least one more movie to come.
It’s surprising, because no one could have guessed we’d get to this point in the beginning. The first four films in the series have grossed nearly $1 billion at the global box office. That’s an impressive total considering all of them had budgets under $100 million, but it’s hardly an indication of what’s to come: the seven Fast & Furious films we’ve had since, starting with Fast Five and including the spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, have grossed a combined $6 billion worldwide. That’s a wholly unique record for a franchise that isn’t based on any beloved existing intellectual property—that extremely rare blockbuster film franchise that’s popular on its own merits.
We now have 11 movies in the pipeline, including a spinoff film starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, video games, a Netflix animated series, and more. However, what is being billed as the final film in the main series is a series set to premiere in 2026. So you have plenty of time to rewatch this entire epic car saga between now and then — and you should definitely do so, because this series is one of a kind.
