Earlier this month, rumors surfaced that The Acolyte had been canceled after just one season on Disney+. Lee Jung-jae, who played Jedi Master Sol on the show, expressed surprise at The Acolyte's fate. However, Amandla Stenberg, who played twin sisters Osha and Mae on the show, said that “it wasn't a huge shock” after the backlash the show received upon its announcement.
Via Deadline, Stenberg posted a lengthy statement on her Instagram Stories. “For those who don’t know, we have been dealing with a wave of vitriol since the show was announced when it was still a concept and no one had seen it,” Stenberg wrote. She also recounted that “hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudice-based hatred and hateful language” was directed at her and the rest of the cast.
Stenberg had previously acknowledged the backlash when she released an original song about it midway through The Acolyte season. But despite the vitriol she received, Stenberg reiterated her gratitude for the chance to play in the Star Wars universe.
“I just have to say it’s been an incredible honor and a dream come true for me to be in this universe,” Stenberg said. “While, of course, I’m very sad about the show being canceled, and I’m sad that I can’t give more to the people who invested in it, I still feel a lot of lightness and joy around the fact that I got to experience it and that people loved it and were so receptive.”
All eight episodes of The Acolyte are streaming on Disney+, but the series has left plenty of unanswered questions and lingering plot threads that will likely never be resolved in live-action. It's possible that some of these resolutions could come in a future story set in the High Republic era. But for now, it looks like The Acolyte won't have a proper conclusion.
