The 512-page My Neighbor Totoro is available now for $27

If you wish read a Studio Ghibli film, the My Neighbor Totoro Movie Comic All-in-One Edition The series is now available. Retailing for $27 (was $30) on Amazon, this 584-page hardcover omnibus edition collects all six My Neighbor Totoro paperback comics, some of which are hard to find at reasonable prices these days. Even if you could find all six at an official retailer at list price ($10 each), you’d still be spending more than double the price of the all-in-one edition of My Neighbor Totoro.

You can also pre-order the hardcover omnibus versions of Kiki's Delivery Service movie comic strip, which comes out on October 22nd and Comic strip from the movie Spirited Awaywhich is scheduled for release on January 28, 2025. Individual volumes of these films are even harder to find, including Spirited Away, which was released theatrically in 2001 and remains the highest-grossing film in Studio Ghibli's catalog. Spirited Away became the first Japanese anime to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature—and remained the only Oscar winner in that category until Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron won the Oscar earlier this year.

These graphic novels are notable because they use the original animation cells from the film for the illustrations. They've all been retooled and reformatted to look like comics and manga panels, and the result is surprisingly effective. Spirited Away is 864 pages in total, while My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service are 584 each. Hopefully Howl's Moving Castle, which also has a movie comic series, will get the All-In-One treatment next.

For anyone who loves the art direction of Studio Ghibli films, this is a great way to “pause” a movie so you can focus on the little details of these beautifully animated stories. Since these comics use original cells and illustrations from the films, they can also be considered reasonably priced art books. The recommended age ranges for readers vary by book. My Neighbor Totoro is recommended for ages 8-11, while Kiki’s Delivery Service is for ages 11-14. Spirited Away doesn’t have a recommended age range listed yet, but the comics were written for ages nine and up when the series debuted in 2002.

Studio Ghibli Films

There are many other Studio Ghibli books already available to add to your personal library, including the traditional art books for Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service. Each of these films has also been adapted into picture books.

But perhaps the most notable book deal on Amazon is Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga box set for $53 (was $80).
