The Kansas City Chiefs have had an incredible Super Bowl record in recent years, collecting three titles since the start of the decade. But the early 2020s are best remembered as the start of the COVID pandemic, and one woman's actions these days are prompting one Chiefs player to defend himself.
Chicago school district superintendent Vera Liddell pleaded guilty on August 9 to the bizarre crime of stealing $1.5 million worth of chicken wings and was sentenced to nine years in prison. But he found a backer in Chiefs defensive tackle and three-time Super Bowl champion Chris Jones, who is offering to help free him by paying the price for the wings.
“I'm paying for the wings you stole to free me,” Jones wrote on X.

It all started when Liddell was tasked with ordering meat for home delivery to students studying remotely during the pandemic. WGN. Prosecutors said he placed the orders and did the billing between July 2020 and February 2022. ABC News.
The situation came to a head last year when an audit revealed the district's food department had exceeded its annual budget by $300,000. The district's business manager found the $1.5 million chicken wing bill, raising eyebrows because bone-in foods are not served to students. Prosecutors said he ordered more than 11,000 packages of chicken wings between August and November 2021 and loaded them into a district delivery van. CBS News.
It remains to be seen whether local authorities will accept Jones' offer.
