Poltergeist TV Series in the Works

In 1996, Poltergeist received its first TV series, Poltergeist: The Legacy, which was only loosely connected to the films. That series ran for four seasons before ending in 1999, but now there is a new version of the Poltergeist TV series coming from Amazon MGM Studios.

According to Variety, the Poltergeist series has found two showrunners and executive producers, Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson. Of those two, Vazquez has a more diverse list of series under his belt, including Nikita, Prison Break, Fear the Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, and Star Trek: Discovery. Thompson's experience comes primarily from Supernatural, the long-running genre series where he served as a co-executive producer for several seasons. He was also the creator and showrunner of the prequel series, The Winchesters.

No details are currently available on the story of the Poltergeist television series, other than that it is based on the original 1982 film, whose house was recently put up for sale. There have been two theatrically released Poltergeist sequels, and a 2015 remake that was not as well received.

Tobe Hooper directed Poltergeist, which follows the Freeling family as they are haunted by increasingly malevolent ghosts. Steven Spielberg came up with the story and co-wrote the screenplay. Spielberg’s production company Amblin Television is also producing the new Poltergeist series with Amazon MGM Studios.
