Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft premiered earlier this month on Netflix, but the animated series has already been renewed for a second season. And given that Netflix has already revealed an image from season 2, it appears that the renewal was ordered well before the series' debut.
Netflix made the announcement on its Tudum site, alongside a photo of Lara (Hayley Atwell) reunited with her best friend, Sam Nishimura (The Boys' Karen Fukuhara), with whom she largely lost contact after the events of the Tomb reboot. Raider in 2013. The eight-episode season took place after the events of 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider and was intended to connect Lara from the reboot trilogy with her iconic character from the original Tomb Raider games. Season 1 had a score of 65 on Metacritic, which indicated generally favorable reviews.
Lara and Sam were separated in the first season of this series, but the final moments of the season finale hinted that the next story would revolve around Sam and Lara.
According to Netflix, the overarching story of season 2 will bring Lara and Sam together to track down stolen African Orisha masks that have hidden powers and “dark secrets.” Their main adversary is also described as “a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself.”
Tasha Huo, showrunner of Tomb Raider, briefly discussed the story theme of the next season.
“So thematically, Season 1 is about Lara understanding the way her father dealt with grief, which was isolating,” Huo said. “When we meet Lara, she's very isolated. As we go into season 2, we're trying to build Lara's team over the course of the series, so she goes from being an isolated hero, who just wants to do things by herself… a lone wolf – only to realize, 'Actually, I have this really cool team behind me.'”
Netflix has not yet set a date for season 2 of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, but the first season is currently streaming.
