First images of The Mandalorian and Grogu revealed at D23

It's been almost five years since a Star Wars movie hit theaters, but that's set to change in 2026 when The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters just in time for the franchise's 49th anniversary. At D23, fans discovered that the film had already begun production, and the first footage was shown to the public.

With the film only having started shooting a few weeks ago, there wasn't much to show. Lucasfilm started with a flashback to the first meeting of Din Djarin and Grogu, played by Pedro Pascal, in the first episode of The Mandalorian. From there, we got a glimpse of their subsequent adventures, which included a fight against an AT-AT.

Grogu still leaves the filming to his dad, but they also have a quiet moment together sharing soup. Zeb from Star Wars Rebels also makes a brief appearance. Additionally, Grogu was seen on a ship alongside Babu Fick's species, and Snowtroopers also made an appearance.

The film will take place after season 3 of The Mandalorian, which ended with Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, officially adopting Grogu as his son while training him to be part of Mandalorian culture.

Jon Favreau is directing the film, which will be released on May 22, 2026. Lucasfilm also shared the first trailer for Skeleton Crew at D23. Other highlights from the first day included the announcement of Toy Story 5 and the reveal of the name of Avatar 3.
